23-24 July 2016: Artistic Fencing World Championship in Kolomna

On July 23rd and 24th, 2016, Kolomna Speedskating Arena welcomes Artistic fencing World Championship.

For the first time in its history Kolomna hosts VI Artistic fencing World Championship. This spectacular sport allows you to simultaneously enjoy the high art of the theater, exquisite beauty of fencing mastery of different times and countries.

7 countries will participate in the Championship: France, Italy, Spain, Czech Republic, Sweden, Poland and Russia – more than 70 competitors from Russia and about 120 athletes from other countries.

The Organizer of the Artistic fencing World Championship is the International Academy of Arms (AAI). The Championship is held every four years, which makes it even more significant that such competition will be held in Kolomna. In 2012, the World Championship was held in Portugal, in 2008 – in San Marino.

The selection of fencers and extras for the Championship is held by the national Academies of Arms. Each country may suit up a maximum of two acts in each category. The host country (Russia) is entitled to three acts.

Fencers over 18 years old can participate in the acts (over 16 y.o. in two categories). The following categories will be presented during the Championship:

  1. Solo (solo fight with an imaginary opponent, or preparatory training for a fight).
  2. Ensemble (group performance in rhythm or a cascade where at least one series is performed in sync by the group from 2 to 8 people).
  3. Duel (fight of two competitors).
  • Antiquity (before 1499 AD).
  • Present (since 1500 AD).
  • out of time (selectable costumes, music and weapons).
  1. Battle (Fight performed by several people, a maximum of 16 fencers may simultaneously be onstage).

The judging panel of the Championship consists of  Masters of Arms, as well as qualified experts in the artistic fencing, theater arts and show directing. The evaluation will be formed of the technical and artistic characteristics.

The Control Bureau monitors the compliance of weapons and costumes to the stated eras and monitor the safety of the weapons. The Bureau must be presented with confirmation of compliance with the historical period (photos, paintings, sculptures, pieces of fencing treatises). In addition, artistic fencing, as a sport, is governed by the rules of anti-doping controls.

During the World Championship all events will be broadcasted online.

The performances start at 10 am (local time) on July 23rd and 24th.
